Read Naturally's Take Aim at Vocabulary is well-suited to support core reading programs and address the Foundational Skills and Reading and Language Anchor Standards as described below.
Standard: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis in decoding words.
Take Aim at Vocabulary lessons meet the culminating standard in this area: Use combined knowledge of all letter-sound correspondences, syllabication patterns, and morphology (e.g., roots and affixes) to read accurately unfamiliar multisyllabic words in context and out of context.
In Take Aim at Vocabulary students master the skills and strategies needed to decode multisyllabic words. Students:
Standard: Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
Take Aim at Vocabulary lessons develop fluency and emphasize reading for meaning. Small groups of students (or individual students) are directly taught to follow the Read Naturally Strategy to improve fluency using nonfiction stories. Each student works through a set of carefully designed steps to reach a goal: to accurately and expressively read text at an appropriate rate, self-correcting when necessary. Students answer comprehension questions to demonstrate understanding.
Standard: Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.
Take Aim at Vocabulary lessons include comprehension questions that require students to attend to key ideas and details in the text by answering questions in these categories: main idea, detail, vocabulary, and inference. At the end of each unit, questions require students to draw conclusions, compare ideas or events across stories, and extend the meaning of the target words.
Standard: Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas.
Take Aim at Vocabulary requires students to be accountable for meaning by including comprehension questions within the lessons and at the end of a unit. Each story has questions about the main idea and details.
