Enhancing Vocabulary Development
The Read Naturally Strategy programs include a Key Words step in which students read along with audio recordings of selected key words and their definitions. This benefits all students but is especially important for expanding the vocabulary of multilingual students. Consider providing additional vocabulary support for multilinguals by adapting the steps as described below.
Read Naturally Live and Read Naturally Live—Español
Ways to enhance vocabulary development in Read Naturally Live and Read Naturally Live—Español:
- During the Cold Timing step, a student should click on unknown words to hear the words pronounced.
- During the Read Along step, a student should click on highlighted vocabulary words to see and hear the definitions.
- During the Pass step, the teacher should review the words that the student found difficult in the Cold Timing and/or Practice step(s) by clicking the Story Details tab on the Pass/Review Work screen.
- The Wordtastic vocabulary game is available when the student is waiting for the teacher before the Cold Timing and Pass steps. The student selects synonyms or antonyms for words of similar difficulty to the student's Read Naturally Live level. The student can click individual words to hear them pronounced.
Read Naturally Encore II
Ways to enhance vocabulary development in Read Naturally Encore II:
- The teacher should ask the multilingual student to underline any unknown words during the Cold Timing, Read Along, and/or Practice steps.
- The teacher should require the student to look up the underlined words in the glossary or in a dictionary.
- If the underlined word is in the glossary, the student should read along while listening to the definition on the CD.
- The teacher should discuss the meanings of the underlined words with the student.
If the student is a native Spanish speaker: - The student can listen to the story in Spanish before beginning the steps in English.
- Read Naturally Encore II—Español is available with translations of the corresponding stories and steps in the Sequenced series.
- Students learning English or Spanish could use the glossary from either the English or Spanish series to support vocabulary acquisition.
