The student works at his or her own pace in an appropriate level of material as the motivating program guides the student through the steps. The student masters a story by reading along with audio and then practicing the story until he or she can read it fluently and with comprehension. The program automatically tracks the student's progress.

pointerResearch basis for the Read Naturally Strategy

One Minute Reader Live stepsOne Minute Reader Live Steps

Before beginning the steps of each story, the student selects the book and story he or she wants to read. Choosing the story deepens the student’s investment in the material.

  1. Cold Read
The student reads the story for one minute and then clicks the last word read when the bell sounds.
  2. Cold Read Graph
A graph displays the student’s cold-timing score, establishing a baseline for progress monitoring, the component of the Read Naturally Strategy that motivates the student to improve.
  3. Read Along
The student reads along quietly with a recording of the story, typically three times. This step is the teacher-modeling component of the Read Naturally Strategy, which helps the student learn new words and master others as well as learn proper pronunciation, expression, and phrasing.
  4. Read Alone
The student practices reading the story independently until able to read it accurately and with expression. This step is the repeated-reading component of the Read Naturally Strategy, which helps the student improve fluency, master difficult words, and understand the story.
  5. Read Alone Graph
A graph displays the student’s current words-per-minute score compared to the Cold Read score, showcasing the student’s improvement.
  6. Quick Quiz
The student answers questions about the story. Responding to the text holds the student accountable for meaning, develops the ability to answer many types of questions, and provides information about how well the student comprehends the story. The correct answers to the questions help to solve the book’s Joke Jumble.
  7. Story Summary
The student reviews the results from completing the story, including a graph that shows how much the student has improved since the cold read.
  8. Book Summary
The student reviews the results from other stories completed in the level. Graphs are included.
  9. Did You Know?
Students are presented with additional facts related to the stories from each book (only shown after the student has completed all the stories in a book).

I will have to admit I was very concerned at first with my students working with this program. After being a teacher for over 20 years, I have noticed that some computer programs allow students to continue to hit next or "trick" the program into thinking they have a skill that they do not. I love how the teacher has the ability to go back and adjust the students lesson. I can make adjustments to better fit the specific skill that I am wanting to target with each of my students. I can also slow down my students that have a tendency to rush through things. I think this is a good tool to use along with a phonics program.

I've been using Read Live for 6 years now, and I still love it and believe in it more and more each year. My students' fluency improves every year, most of them at least by one grade level, other students more. The students love to see their progression over time, and push themselves to read more. I love how I can customize settings for each student. I have some middle students that are still on a first grade reading level, so I change their settings in order that they don't become frustrated, and I can change them as they start to improve. I also love that I can give them a placement tests at my discretion. This has proven to motivate students more, they almost always show growth. This is a very motivational program, and very teacher and student friendly.

I have been using Read Live for over 25 years. The reason I continue to use this program is the success that I see with the students. The rereads help the students keep track of their learning by tracking their own fluency. They have a goal and try to achieve that number or higher with each reading. You should see their face light up with a big smile when they reach their personalized goal. As an incentive, they get a sticker on a chart for making their goal.

I switched roles at the beginning of the school year and was so overwhelmed with the new position, I did not renew the Read Live account due to not knowing how I would fit it all in. Shame on me! After using it now for just a couple of weeks and seeing how the students are already reading more fluently, I am disappointed in myself for not giving them the entire year. They say, hindsight is 20/20! My students will now start the next year with this great resource and I am excited to see where they land!

Read Live is a fantastic program to build reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing with students. Our school uses it daily and the students make gains in all areas mentioned. It's easy to use and a predictable routine for the kids. The non-fiction stories are varied and interesting. The Read Naturally website has lots of resources for teachers and students. I highly recommend this program!

Read Live has had an effective impact on the primary students in my building, particularly when it comes to boosting their reading fluency. The program provides students with a structured, engaging approach to practice reading skills at their own pace. What’s especially helpful is that it tailors the reading material to each student's level, making sure they are challenged without feeling overwhelmed. It’s easy to use, motivating for students, and provides the support and structure they need to succeed.

I have been using Read Live with a group of 7th-grade students this year. The students love using Read Live and often request it when starting a lesson for the day. They use it independently, and it allows me to check in on individual students who might need extra support. It makes planning lessons easier for me and I can see progress through the program. Read Live is perfect for middle school students who are reluctant readers. The short stories are engaging and offer the students choices about what they read.

I am an Instructional coach in my district. I worked with students that struggle with reading fluency. The value that Read Naturally offers to our students is amazing. The program is easy to implement and the progress easy to monitor. Students enjoy seen their own progress in every reading.
I appreciate the conveniency of printing and sharing results with fellow teachers and parents. This communication allows us all to have the same goal; student success.

Read Live has been a game-changer this year! Students have made noticeable progress with fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The stories are diverse and interesting. Students enjoy choosing stories, working towards their goals, and seeing immediate results. I like that students can work independently and also with me. The vocabulary and quiz components add depth and purpose. It's more than another repeated reading fluency program. I especially like being able to adjust and control functions and the detailed reports. Students enjoy viewing their graphs and the information is excellent to share with classroom teachers and parents. I can also adjust and plan for instruction using the data gathered. I can't stop raving about it! :-)

Read Live has been a game changer for student engagement in an intensive autism classroom. I personally purchased this to support current reading instruction. The vocab with pictures has even added support for an ELL student. Do wish there was more of visual support within the quiz feature and more spelling during passing the passage.

Read Live has been an invaluable tool for my students. It allows them to work on fluency and comprehension at their own pace and level, which helps them feel more confident in their reading skills. I particularly appreciate how they can read along with the story out loud and then practice reading independently. The word lists are also a great feature, providing extra opportunities for students to practice word recognition.

One area my students often struggle with is vocabulary, but Read Live helps them make significant progress by offering the story as a reference to help with definitions. This support is crucial, especially when answering comprehension questions. I've noticed a real improvement in their comprehension skills, thanks to the ability to refer back to the text when needed.

The students also love seeing their progress after each "hot read." Even when they don't meet their goal, they appreciate the opportunity to try again and improve next time. This reinforces a growth mindset and motivates them to keep working hard.

Overall, both my students and I have greatly enjoyed using Read Live, and we've seen noticeable growth in their reading skills!

I have been using Read Naturally for years and I am a big fan. I love the fact that it hits so many target areas all in one program; decoding, encoding, fluency, vocabulary, writing, concrete and inferential thinking .... I also really like the data that I can use when writing progress notes on the student's ability in each of those areas. It is good, concrete data that I can share with parents and coworkers. I plan to keep using this program for years!

I have been looking for an all inclusive program for my Special Education middle school students. I wanted a program that helped increase their basic decoding, fluency and comprehension skills. This program is very engaging to the students. I ask them who loves it and I was surprised by all of the positive feedback. Students love choosing their own stories and that they can listen to someone read as they practice reading and that they can see their improvements through graphs immediately. I love all the components, the independent features for the students and that the teacher has the ability to turn on and off features and that teachers have to put in their code before a student can take a test. I piloted this program and I am not sure if my county or school will help purchase it, but for me as a teacher, I love it!

My high school students much prefer Read Naturally to our past oral reading fluency/comprehension exercises. They find the choice of reading passages and individualized pace to be very engaging and they love to track their progress! It's not a one-size-fits-all solution, but its a great addition to our reading curriculum.

I teach reading to students with reading disabilities. When I pair Read Live practice with systematic sequential phonics practice, students make huge gains in their ability to read more fluently. The Read Live practice helps students build vocabulary and reading endurance. This year I have had 6th graders who read one new story a week gain 25 words per minute on a first read and have gained a year of growth in their Independent Reading Levels.

Read Live is excellent and we use it a lot to support our weak readers, EAL students who need phonics support and dyslexics. It helps students to speed up their reading, improve comprehension and improve their vocab and is an all-round support for all reading issues. We use it with all ages from year 2 up to year 13 and it is a bedrock of our support system for literacy.
