Read Naturally Live is an online reading program that accelerates reading achievement by combining the research-proven strategies of teacher modeling, repeated reading, and progress monitoring. A student works at his or her own pace in an appropriate level of material. Text and audio guide the student through the steps. The student masters a story by reading along with audio and then practicing the story until he or she can read it fluently and with comprehension. The program automatically tracks student progress.

pointer Research basis for the Read Naturally Strategy

Read Naturally Live is a research-based, online reading program

Read Naturally Live Steps
  1. Select a Story
The student clicks on the story he or she wants to read. Choosing the story deepens the student’s investment in the material.
  2. Key Words
In the Sequenced and Idioms series, the student reads the key words and their definitions while listening to an audio recording. The key words provide definitions that are important to understanding the story. In the Phonics series, the student listens to a phonics lesson and reads words that have the featured phonics patterns.
  3. Prediction
The student uses the title, picture, and key words to write a prediction of what he or she thinks the story is about. The prediction prepares the student’s mind for reading the story.
  4. Cold Timing
The teacher may time the student for one minute as he or she reads the story, or the student may complete this step independently. The student clicks unknown words while reading, and then clicks the last word read during the timing. Read Naturally Live subtracts the unknown words from the total number of words attempted to obtain a cold-timing score and displays it on a graph. This step establishes a baseline for progress monitoring, the component of the Read Naturally Strategy that motivates the student to improve.
  5. Read Along
The student reads along quietly with a recording of the story, typically three times. This step is the teacher-modeling component of the Read Naturally Strategy, which helps the student learn new words and master others as well as learn proper pronunciation, expression, and phrasing.
  6. Practice
The student practices reading the story without audio support three to ten times until able to read it accurately, with expression, and at the goal rate. This step is the repeated-reading component of the Read Naturally Strategy, which helps the student improve fluency, master difficult words, and understand the story.
  7. Quiz
The student answers questions about the story. Responding to the text holds the student accountable for meaning, develops the ability to answer many types of questions, and provides teachers with information about how well the student comprehends the story.
  8. Retell/Word List
In the Sequenced and Idioms series, the student retells or summarizes the story to improve comprehension.
In the Phonics series, the student works on decoding skills by practicing the word list until able to read it accurately at a predetermined rate. The Phonic series also includes a spelling step to give students practice encoding words from the word list.
  9. Pass
The student reads the story for the teacher to show that he or she can read it at the goal rate, with appropriate expression, and with three or fewer errors. The teacher corrects the comprehension questions and the retelling of the story (if applicable) and reviews the results with the student.

In the Phonics series, the student also reads the word list to show that he or she can read it with three or fewer errors at the goal rate. A graph shows how much the student’s fluency has improved since the cold timing.

Additional graphs show results for the comprehension questions, the retelling, and the word lists (if applicable).

Read Naturally Live is a component of Read Live, a subscription program that is licensed per student. Teachers can reassign licenses if students leave the program. Read Live subscriptions include access to all 23 levels of three series. All series have the same basic design with strategic differences.

  • Sequenced series is the basic series and has 13 levels (1.0 – 8.0) with 24 stories per level.
  • Phonics series adds phonics lessons and activities to the basic design and has 6 levels (0.8 – 2.7) with 24 stories per level.
pointer Phonics elements taught in the Phonics series
  • Idioms series teaches common American idioms as students work on reading skills.  Idioms has 4 levels (3.0 – 4.5) with 12 stories per level.
    pointer Featured idioms

The teacher assigns the appropriate series and level for each student. The student works through the level in the student program, and the teacher manages the student's progress in the teacher program.

I have been using RNL with my Title One Reading groups and they love it! They are proud of themselves when they reach their reading goals and their confidence is growing. There is a nice variety of stories and students always find a topic that interests them. I like that we can select reading skills to target individual students needs. I love that RNL is aligned with Science of Reading and students are able to identify and apply what we learn during large group lesson to their RNL stories!

Absolutely LOVE read LIVE. It's a fabulous way for students to engage in authentic nonfiction texts with great comprehension. Our students have excelled at practicing main idea, vocabulary, sequencing, summarizing and other skills for each and every story. Being able to give specific feedback is invaluable. There has been a strong positive correlation between students that participate in read naturally and pass our state assessment. My only wish is to have some fiction passages that aren't idioms. I don't think I'd use any other program for interventions if fiction passages (not idioms) were created. Highly recommend.

Read Live is an amazing program. I have seen my student's ORF rates soar with this program. The students that comprise my class are on multiple reading levels and it makes instruction difficult. Reading Live takes the stress off of meeting the needs of multiple struggling readers and maximizes reading time. Students can successfully work on their reading level while I support them. The stories available to the students are engaging and relevant. The data collected from the reports section is valid and is exactly what my district wants in data meetings. I just attended a Reading League training and this program is aligned with the Science of Reading. I am so thankful for this program and feel confident as a teacher that I am providing science-based practices to my reading instruction.

My daughter was in 4th grade and a very reluctant reader. A teacher in our school at the time found Read Naturally and implemented it as the reading program in her 5th grade class. This is when it was on CDs! My daughter went from a 2nd to a 5th grade reading level in about 3 months. It changed her school experience for the better. She is 30 now and she is a voracious reader and writer. I credit Read Naturally for the dramatic improvement and the confidence it gave her when she exceeded her fluency goal. I personally like the non-fiction stories. They are interesting and she still recalls some of them. Thank you!

My school uses this for high school Special Education students. While this is good research-based material, the stories are extremely boring. My students HATE using this program, and it is the equivalent of busy work. Students find another story about a species of lizard to be troublesome, and they are desperate for content that is of any interest to people over 7 years old. I have been trying to get my school to get rid of the program. It is retarding progress with our most at need students because they dread it. It is a weekly punishment they must endure. This attitude is only a product of wrestling with my students, not my projection of ideas on them.

Hello Mike,

Thank you for your review!

Often in these scenarios, adjusting program settings – such as reducing the number of required read alongs – can help to increase engagement for older students. We offer great insight into customizing the program based on student need & grade in our online knowledgebase here: Knowledgebase :: Adapting Read Naturally Live to Meet Individual Students’ Needs :: Read Naturally, Inc.

That said, although Read Live is widely used in high schools, adult literacy programs, juvenile detention centers and even adult prisons, no program is right for all students and settings.

Please let us know if we can provide further guidance to assist in your implementation!

I absolutely love the Read Naturally program. My students grew so much as a result of using the program. They are doing their cold reads at 20-30 words higher than when they started Read Naturally two months ago. One of my students said today, " I don't know why I love this so much, but I do!" They just love Read Naturally!

I have seen measurable progress when using the Read Live program to build fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills. I like assigning homework on Read Live and then meeting with the student, to go over their progress during the school day. The stories are fun and engaging and the feedback is very motivating for students.

This is my first time using Read Naturally and I already see some amazing benefits for both the students and myself, the classroom teacher. I see the skills they are learning on Read Naturally naturally help their reading skills transfer in other areas. It helps me differentiate individual student's needs and get that pointed one-on-one instruction to readers who need it. I wish ALL of my students could use Read Naturally!

This past year Read Live has added components of the program that make it convenient for me to offer students a wide range of tutoring depending on their levels and their reading skills. We are just finishing a challenging school year, but one that has allowed me to help my students make significant gains in their skills because of the Read Naturally suite of products which includes Word Warm-ups and One Minute Reader.

I love the program, and it has provided a perfect intervention for my 5th graders. I wondered if you have plans to add Word Warm-Ups level 2 (two syllable words) and Level 3 (multisyllabic words) to the Live edition? My students' level of participation has increased so much since incorporating the Live edition (over the older version that required CD players (with batteries that went dead, and headphones that never worked). Would very much like to see the next two levels added to LIVE!!

Carolyn, I'm with you on inquiring about the Word Warm-Ups Level 2 and Level 3. I love that you can place students on the Sequence Stories and then have them work on those Word Warm-Up Levels where they are having difficulty with decoding those syllable types on just words to increase their fluency. I am also a huge fan of the Read Live vs. paper-pencil, CD version.

TJ Ihnot, Marketing at Read Naturally Apr 8, 2021

We’re so glad your students are having success! Word Warm-ups Live Level 2 is in development and should be available this fall. Level 3 will take a little longer, but we are planning to add that content as well.

I gave the placement assessment today virtually for the first time to a brand new student to our program. I shared my screen. It was so simple. I was able to place him in less than 10 minutes. With the extra time, I gave the student and his Nanna a walkthrough of the Read Live process from Cold Read to Hot Read all from my computer! Being able to log in as the student makes this possible!

I had used the paper version of Read Naturally for many years with my English As A Second Language students. I loved the way it let me differentiate instruction and the excellent background knowledge and rich vocabulary the children received from the non-fiction stories. After I retired I began volunteering in an under-served city school district and used the paper program in one on one tutoring sessions with native English speakers who were reading below grade level. When schools closed due to the current health crisis, I didn't know how I could help these children anymore, but with Read Live, the excellent support from the Read Naturally videos and webinars, and the Chromebooks that were distributed to the students I have been able to continue working with my students and experience even more growth in their progress. The children are very engaged in their learning and it shows in their positive improvement.

Thank you so much for helping me to begin using your program for my 7th grade special education reading students. I was assisted in a timely manner and I always felt satisfied with the feedback and support provided by a gentleman by the name of Joel Olson. He was patient with me and always took the time to make sure I was leaving our support conversation with the answers to the questions I had. I would love nothing more than to continue using your reading program, however, I will be leaving my current teaching position at Shepherd and moving to Poston, another junior high school in the Mesa School District. I will be teaching Pre-Algebra. I highly recommend this program and would gladly recommend the support staff (especially Joel) to help teachers who are new to Read Naturally. Thank you again for the opportunity to use your program.

Your support staff is awesome. I have worked with Joel before. He is truly an asset to your support. Your videos for students have been so well thought out and helpful for them and now their parents as new assistants. Thank you for being so responsive to the needs as they are presenting themselves this year. I have worked with RN since the 90's with the paper pencil version to the SE version and now with Read Live.

Our school is an at-risk elementary school with 93% poverty. We have been using the program for 5+ years. We are thrilled with the program and love the success rate of our students. Our students are so engaged and love the stories, they even research stories further to learn more. The graphs are motivating and lend themselves to the student success. After assessing students and targeting the students in greatest need we are able to track progress with the very precise assessment components that are part of the Read Live program. One of the great aspects of this program is the variety that is offered. Not only variety in the stories but the variety in the skills that can be covered. The success of any intervention is targeting the skills needed specifically by each individual student.
