Giving students access to Word Warm-ups-Live

Each student must have a Read Live license to work in any Read Live component, including Read Naturally Live or Word Warm-ups Live.
To work in Word Warm-ups Live, students also need to be assigned access to the Word Warm-ups application. The Read Live Staff Member Module is used to add that access.

In the Staff Member Module, Staff Members can give Word Warm-ups Live access to individual licensed students, one at a time, on the Student Details page. Staff Members can also assign licenses to more than one student at a time on the Word Warm-ups Live Student page.

To assign Word Warm-ups Live access to individual students:

  1. Log in to the Staff Member Module.
  2. If you are a Teacher, from the navigation menu, select Student Setup.
If you are an Account Administrator or School Coordinator, from the navigation menu, select Student Administration, and then click Student Setup.
  3. Sort and filter the list of students to find the one to whom you want to assign Word Warm-ups Live access.
  4. Click the student's last name.
  5. On the Student Details page, below the License heading, verify that the student has a license.
Students must have a Read Live license in order to use Word Warm-ups Live.
  6. Select the Word Warm-ups access checkbox.
The default Section assignment is Level 1 Section B with a goal of 40 wcpm. You can change that based on the recommended Section from the WWL Phonics Assessment. See Placing Students in Word Warm-ups Live using a phonics assessment.
  7. Click Save & Close.

The default assignment in Word Warm-ups Live is Level 1, Section B, Short Vowels.
To tailor a student's assignment using the Assess Phonics/Word Analysis tool built into Read Live:

  1. Open the Teacher Menu in Word Warm-ups Live or Read Naturally Live, and choose Assess Phonics/Word Analysis.
  2. Choose Assess Letter Sounds Knowledge to test the student on the sounds of the letters of the alphabet
    or
Choose Assess Decoding Skills to test the student on words and word parts.
  3. If you need help with administering the phonics assessment, review the Assessment instructions PDF.
  4. Make appropriate selections from the Assessment Level and Skills to assess dropdowns based on your knowledge of the student.
The default selections on this page are based on information Read Live has about the student's previous phonics assessments; Read Naturally Live assignment; and grade.
  5. Choose Start Selected Assessment to begin assessing the student.
  6. Ask the student to clearly pronounce each word part or word, and then to wait until you tell them to continue.
If the student makes an error, do not provide the correct response.
  7. Score the student's response as follows:
    1. Choose Correct or Incorrect.
Note: If you choose Incorrect, the Response field will allow you to enter what the student said using the letters (or sound symbols) that make sense to you (e.g., if the test item was "fon" and the student said "phone," you could enter phone, fone, or fōn in the notes field).
    2. Enter any additional information you want recorded about the student's response under Notes (e.g., you might enter SD for slowly decoded, SC for self corrected, correct vowel sound).
  8. Choose Next to continue to the next item.
  9. As the student completes each set of 5 or 6 items, review the student's performance.
When the student correctly answered 80% or more of the test items, you can choose to continue with another set of items or to see suggested assignments based on the current assessment.
When the student does not answer 80% of the items in a set correctly, the assessment will suggest assignments related on that set.
  10. Choose Next.
If the student continues to the next set of items, return to step 6 above.
If the student did not continue to the next set, a list of possible assignments based on the most recent assessment is shown.
  11. Choose an assignment from the suggestions on the right side of the page.
These assignments are based on the phonics assessment the student has just taken, along with other information Read Live has about the student.
  12. The phonics assessment can add access, and an assignment, to Read Naturally Live, Word Warm-ups Live, or both.
  13. Note that continuing with the current assignment is always among the options provided.
  14. Choose Next.
  15. Choose Yes to confirm any new assignment.
The student's application access and assignments are changed to reflect the choices you made as a result of the phonics assessment.
